Novel Soundtrack: Track 12

12) I’ll Be Seeing You by Billie Holiday

Event: At the end of the novel, Tea Cake dies leaving Janie all alone. She is mourning Tea Cakes death but is finally at peace with herself. This song could represent Janie’s mourning of Tea Cake’s death. The song talks about how “I’ll be seeing you in everything that’s light and gay. I’ll always think of you that way.” This models the way that I see Janie reacting to Tea Cake’s death. Although she is saddened by the loss, she will remember him for all the joy he brought to her life.

Lyrics:

I'll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through.

In that small cafe;
The park across the way;
The children's carousel;
The chestnut trees;
The wishin' well.

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day;
In every thing that's light and gay.
I'll always think of you that way.

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I'll be looking at the moon,
But I'll be seeing you.

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day;
In every thing that's light and gay.
I'll always think of you that way.

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I'll be looking at the moon,
But I'll be seeing you.
